  YIORGOS VAKIRTZIS (1923-1988)

Born at the Island of Mytilene, Yiorgos Vakirtzis studied at the School of Fine Arts, Athens (1939-1946) with Umbertos Argyros and Costas Parthenis.  He later continued his studies at the École des Beaux Arts and other open academies of art in Paris (1951-1952).  At the same time (1938-1940) he was taught by Stephanos Almaliotis the art of τηε gigantic poster, which he professed with success for many years on account of numerous cinemas in Athens (1945-1963).  He had his first solo exhibition in that same city (1960).  Since 1949, however, he had participated to group shows in Greece and abroad.  Other one-man and group exhibitions followed as well.  He published a series of books on fine arts and has written studies, essays and articles on art and its application.  In his work one may distinguish a subjective realism.  Yiorgos Vakirtzis passed away in Athens (1988).
