  YIANNIS VALAVANIDIS (1939-2017)

Born in Athens, Yannis Valavanidis studied at the School of Fine Arts painting, etching and mosaics with Yannis Moralis and Constantine Grammatopoulos (1957-1963).  He had his first one-man show in Athens (1970), but had already participated to group exhibitions since 1958.  Other solo and group shows followed in Greece and abroad.  He was member of "Art Group A'" (1965-1967), of the group "New Greek Realists" (1971-1973), of the "Group for the Communication and Education in Fine Arts" (1979-1986) and of the "Contemporary Art League" (1979-1984).  He had illustrated a number of books and poetry collections.  He was professor (1982-2006) and Deputy Dean (2001-2004) at the School of Fine Arts where he teached painting and mosaics.  His work belongs to the critical realism.  Yannis Valavanidis passed away in Athens (2017).
